City Hostel, located in downtown Seattle, tailors itself toward providing a truly unique experience for its guests. They describe themselves as “Seattle’s Only Art Hostel”, with murals from a variety of local artists covering the walls of each of their rooms. Their clientele are primarily young travelers who are looking to do something outside the norm, driven by a combination of frugality and the desire to experience something new.

This advertisement, made for Seattle’s free City Arts magazine, shows a journey along the path less traveled. It aims to invite the viewer into a new world and give a sense of youthful excitement about experiencing another side of Seattle.

East of Eastlake is an independently-owned used bookstore located, as the name implies, on the east side of Eastlake Avenue in Seattle. The store is dedicated to providing a haven for city’s avid readers, giving people a place to escape their busy lives and dive into the diverse selection of used and like-new books that stock their shelves. This identity project seeks to give the bookstore a look and feel that matches their ethos through unique packaging and peripherals that invite thoughts of a story that takes place far-far-away.

The logo for East of Eastlake, featuring a flock of books taking flight, has two versions: one with their wordmark and one with only the logomark. The business card, which doubles as a bookmark, features a scene known mostly to those intimately familiar with the Eastlake scene: A solitary ropeswing that hangs overlooking Lake Union. The envelope is designed with an emblem placed over the seal, almost as if it were a lost letter from some distant, by-gone era, while the shopping bag is decorated along the bottom with the rolling, gentle waves of the lake.

The Country Lips are Seattle’s raucous and rowdy nine member country band known for their foot-stomping ballads, rugged honky-tonk sound, and rambunctious live shows. Their music is mostly country-inspired songs about lonesomeness, troublesome women, and the perils of partying hard in the U-District.

Visually, Touched by Country Lips was designed to combine the down and dirty dynamism of the Lips with the Victorian design sensibilities of the early 20th century. This juxtaposition of styles gives us an unexpectedly attractive balance between dignified composure and a near complete lack of dignity.

Out of all the books I’ve read, the one most deserving of a redesign has been the wonderful Hitchhiker’s Guide. Douglas Adams is said to have absolutely hated the little green mascot that decorates most of the series’ dust jackets, but lost the battle with his publishers over it’s inclusion. I’d like to think that if Mr. Adams had a chance to see my redesign of his book, he’d find it much more acceptable. The jacket design takes on a more serious tone, but remains humorous as it takes the idea of “hitchhiking” to a cosmic level. Inside, each chapter is headed with a constellation that subtly hints at what’s to come.

Veer makes it easier to be creative with a reliable and affordable selection of creative stock photography, stock illustrations, fonts, and creative merchandise.

One of the driving concepts behind Veer’s branding is their Elements for Creativity campaign. The idea is to artistically combine images and fonts, demonstrating how the elements a customer purchases from Veer can come together to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

While most stock photo sites treat photos like any other commodity, Veer’s approach has always been to focus on the creative needs of their customers. Their hip voice and light-hearted campaigns appeal to the designers, bloggers, and artists who rely on stock photos to power their projects. So when Veer approached us to come up with a way to push their RF image collections, we knew it was the perfect opportunity to do something a bit… out of the ordinary.

By the end of the campaign, over 6,000 people had played the game, giving Veer 1,000 new customers and increasing RF sales by 15%.

McGiffin’s Scotch Ale, a product of McGiffin’s Brewing Company, was looking to develop a strong package design reflect their unique brand. The goals were to give the beer a strong Scottish-themed identity that could be easily recognized on store shelves, as well as building an identity for the brewery. The McGiffin’s logo was designed using a modified Old English typeface, and a Scottish tartan pattern is used as a unifying element across the McGiffin’s brand. The character for Scotch Ale, “McGiffin”, is an original work created to give some personality and humor to the brand, and may be modified for use across other McGiffin’s products.

The packaging was made to be bright and bold to grab attention on store shelves, with colors and patterns that should be instantly recognizable from far away. “McGiffin” is holding up his beer looking the consumer right in the eye, as if to say “Well if ye can’t be a Scot, at least ye can drink like one!”

This poster was created as a project in guerilla typography; to find an ugly poster from the wild and replace it with something beautiful. I found a small flyer on a telephone pole in Fremont advertising “MISSING!!! Huge grey rabbit,” and featuring a picture of a very large, very fluffy bunny. I figured that there probably weren’t going to be too many stray rabbits roaming the streets of Fremont and opted to leave the picture out of my version.
